Subject: Cleaning Process Description for Visar Battery Contacts

Symptom: Radio resets when bumped, intermittent radio - battery contact

Cause: Under normal operations, the Visar battery contacts should remain clear of contamination, but in instances when contacts are subjected to surface contaminants, simple maintenance will prolong the use and effectiveness of the Visar Radio. Contamination may be as obvious as black marks on contacts but may also exist transparently.

Corrective Action: It is therefore recommended that the following process be performed on a regular basis.

1. With the battery removed from the radio and with the label and contacts facing you, inspect the contacts for mechanical degradation i.e. nicks, cuts, scratches in the contacts or plastic. Order replacement batteries if mechanically damaged.

2. If possible, hold the battery inverted so that contaminants fall away from the battery and do not lodge in recesses at the edge of contacts.

3. a) Using a clean pink eraser, stroke the contacts in the same direction as the length of the contact. With a dry bristle brush (toothbrush), brush away the eraser particles.

or

b) Using a cotton swab in good condition, wet the tip in isopropyl alcohol and wipe in the same
direction as the length of the contact. Avoid alcohol contact with the battery plastic. Using a dustless cloth, wipe away excess alcohol and residue.

4. After cleaning, re-inspect contacts. Ensure that recesses at edge of contacts are free from cleaning materials.
